  Children and Youth Therapy

Children and Youth Therapy

Child and youth therapy is a specialized field of counseling focused on addressing the emotional, psychological, and developmental challenges faced by children and young people. It provides a safe and supportive environment for clients to explore their feelings, develop coping mechanisms, and build resilience. This type of therapy can help with a variety of issues including:

  • support for mental health (anxiety, depression, ocd, phobias, etc.)

  • support for neurodiversity (ADHD, Autism,  learning challenges, etc.)

  • trauma (including abuse, medical trauma, relational trauma, being a witness of violence etc.)

  • grief and loss

  • self-esteem

  • addiction (substance use, technology or gaming addiction)

  • family dynamics

  • behavioral concerns

  • Therapists tailor their approaches to the developmental stage of the individual, often utilizing methods such as play therapy, talk therapy, cognitive-behavioral techniques, or creative arts to engage and support their clients effectively.

Collaboration is a key component of child and youth therapy, as it often involves parents, caregivers, and educators to create a comprehensive support system. The goal is not only to address the immediate challenges the young person is facing but also to foster their long-term emotional growth and well-being. By equipping youth with the tools to understand and manage their emotions, relationships, and behaviors, therapy empowers them to navigate life's complexities with confidence and resilience.

Approaches to Therapy

For Children and Youth

We understand that children express themselves and heal in ways that are often different from adults. That’s why we offer a variety of developmentally appropriate, evidence-based approaches tailored to meet each child’s unique emotional, behavioral, and relational needs.
Our approaches to children’s therapy include:

  • Play Therapy – A child-centered approach that uses play as a natural form of communication to help children express feelings, resolve challenges, and build coping skills.

  • Sandtray Therapy – A hands-on, sensory-based approach that allows children to create scenes in a tray of sand using miniature figures, helping them process emotions and experiences nonverbally.

  • Art and Expressive Therapy – Encourages creativity and self-expression through drawing, painting, and other art forms, supporting emotional healing and self-awareness.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – Helps children identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts, learn problem-solving strategies, and develop healthier behavior patterns.

  • Exposure Therapy – A gradual, supportive method to help children face and reduce fears or anxieties in a safe, controlled environment.

  • Theraplay® – A playful, attachment-based approach that uses structured activities to strengthen the child-caregiver bond and promote emotional regulation.

  • AutPlay® Therapy – A play-based intervention specifically designed for neurodivergent children (including autism and ADHD), combining elements of play therapy and behavioral support.

  • Mindfulness Techniques – Age-appropriate practices that teach children how to focus their attention, calm their bodies, and manage big emotions.
